Hiker explores Wales and makes spooky discovery at abandoned property

There's nothing quite like embarking on a pleasant stroll through Wales, but sometimes you never know what surprises await you, as one rambler discovered recently. Dan, who goes by the Welsh Hiker on TikTok, regularly shares his walking escapades online, and he recently stumbled upon a rather extraordinary find in Powys.

During his outdoor expedition, he encountered a disused bus depot, previously known as the Browns Coaches site. He explained you'll locate it nestled between the villages of Garth and Cilmery, and the derelict location has attracted attention from history enthusiasts and motor vehiclefans.

Whilst he relished exploring the location, he confessed it proved a "sharp" outing, owing to numerous warning notices throughout the area declaring: "Danger: Asbestos." Dan merely captured several snapshots before departing, though he made an unsettling find prior to leaving - andit wasn't his first remarkable encounter during his journeys.

According to Dan, the location has earned recognition as a "bus graveyard", housing countless forsaken buses lying in decay. Numerous vehicles are mere skeletons of their original forms, corroding whilst existence carries on around them.

It presents quite a spine-chilling spectacle, appearing rather ghostly whilst the surroundings remain eerily silent. The tale behind these deserted vehicles remains somewhat enigmatic, yet many find themselves fascinated by this haunting "graveyard of buses."

Last year, authorities actually urged people to avoid the location for several reasons. In recent times, numerous visitors have ventured to the spot hoping to snap pictures of the deteriorating vehicles.

At the location, multiple coaches can be discovered. It's reported some vehicles bear names like "Browns of Bilf," though the site is thought to have been abandoned for at least a decade.

The buses are reportedly positioned close to one another, though many aren't in prime condition these days. Whilst certain coaches are said to be spotless, some apparently still contain keys and others have suffered smashed windows and display evidence of decay.

The former Browns Coaches location, situated alongside the A483 near Builth Wells, draws all manner of urban explorers. It ceased functioning as a garage and petrol station over a decade ago, remaining unused since, yet numerous vehicles remain on-site.

Nevertheless, in 2024, the County Times reportedsite proprietors and local residents voiced worries about trespassers on private property.

According to the publication, in July 2020, Dyfed Powys Police announced officers would start monitoring the vicinity and speak with anyone discovered at the location following reports of damage. At the Browns location, visitors will discover an abandoned service station featuring a workshop and storage facility at the rear.

There's also a coach depot housing derelict vehicles. Reports suggest that it's unclear when the site ceased operations, but it's believed to have stopped trading sometime in the early 2000s, before 2010.

Last year, the County Times reported that the site's use was later changed from a garage to general industrial and storage and distribution.

However, since its closure, the site has become a magnet for urban explorers who are drawn to abandoned and dilapidated buildings usually hidden from public view. Despite numerous explorers visiting the site over the years, the general advice is to steer clear without permission.

It's crucial that this is understood before anyone attempts a visit. Nevertheless, it's evident that the area holds a certain fascination for many.
